| The Clayton Historical Association was formed in February 2005. A group of concerned citizens gathered together with the goal of preserving our local history. We recieved our 501 (c) 3 status from the IRS and began the quest of fulfillling our goal. We acquired The Idaho Mining and Smelter Company Store and had it placed on the National Register of Historic Places. We wrote successful grants and recieved substantial donations from various organizations and opened it as a museum for the Clayton area. Our mission is to preserve, protect, interpret and promote the history of the Clayton area. After 10 months of reconstruction efforts we opened the museum on July 4, 2007. We dedicated it to the people of the Clayton area as they are the one's that make the history. The property we aquired originally had a livery stable and blacksmith shop on it and again we wrote grants and rebuilt it as well. |

Although we have made a great contribution to the area much of our local history has disappeared. We realized that we were only telling part of the history and we desired to present much more. This has brought us to our next, and final stage of development. We desire to accomplish the following:
- Acquire 5 acres of historic property adjacent to the Idaho Mining and Smelter Company Store. This property contains the original site of the Clayton School, the site of the Assayers Office, The Cominotti House, the Superintendent's house and the Employee's house. In addition we plan to move the Maraffio house to this property as well. Click here to view a satellite photo of the area.
- Rebuild the Schoolhouse as it appeared in the 1913 pictures. Once it is completed it will be used as a facility to tudor students from the Clayton area. Click here to view photo and details.
- Rebuild the Assayers Office on its original site. Click here to view photo and details.
- Restore the Superintendent's house. Click here to view photo and details.
- Restore the Employee's house. Click here to view photo and details.
- Restore the Cominotti House. Click here to view photo and details.
- Move The Maraffino House to this location and restore it. Click here to view photo and details.

This project will begin as soon as funds are acquired and the property is transferred to The Clayton Area Historical Association.
Once completed the buildings will be added to the National Register of Historic Places and Clayton will become a historic district. The schoolhouse will be used for tutoring of both gifted and struggling students by a member of our staff that is a retired school teacher and there will be no charge for this service. In addition, all of the buildings will be used for living history demonstrations. There will be no electricity or water in the buildings and they will not be occupied by anyone. These additions to our organization will be maintained by donations.
This is the problem. The total cost of this project is 499.900.00 We have found a organization that will give us a grant for 200,000.00 if we can come up with the rest of the funding by November. So we are asking for anyone's help, either through a donation, or through contacting us with information about available grants we have not explored. |
